The seven Mile Journey Intervista

1 Tutte le mie interviste iniziano con la medesima domanda… quale è il significato di The Seven Mile Journey? Quale è la genesi del nome?

In senso strettamente musicale, ci sono particolari concetti che abbiamo costruito attorno alle nostre canzoni e ai nostri album. Questi concetti sono considerabili come molto estesi e ci permettono di esplorare sensazioni divergenti ,attraverso i diversi approcci che fuoriescono dalle singole tracce.

Ogni album è incentrati su particolari argomentazioni, ma l’uso di una estesa gamma di argomentazioni sonore definisce in questa esplorazione differenti dimensioni, applicabili in vario modo attraverso le singole canzoni.

Al contempo teniamo a mente che l’insieme delle canzoni stesse fornisce il giusto feeling all’album inteso come un’unica storia che è allo stesso tempo crea attorno a sé storie sottostanti che continuano da un album all’altro. Nonostante tutto può essere alquanto difficile notarle, anche se sono presenti.

Dunque il nome della band è stato scelto proprio per supportare questo tipo di approccio.

2 Come siete diventati parte della United Nations of Fluttery Records?

La Fluttery Records ci ha contattato durante le fasi del nostro Notes for the Synthesis. Ci è subito piaciuto l’approccio che hanno con i loro artisti è così abbiamo deciso di realizzare con loro il nostro nuovo album.

3 Come nascono le vostre canzonì? Potete descriverci il processo di creazione?

La maggior parte dei temi delle nostre canzoni sono definite ben prima di entrar in sala di incisione, ma al di là di questo, possiamo dire che quasi tutte le musiche sono create in jamming session, durante le quali ogni membro della band contribuisce alla fase di creazione.

Questa tipologia di approccio porta a dover dedicare molto tempo per la fase di eliminazione e ricostruzione, ma ci permette di essere sicuri che le canzoni mantengano la loro forza nel tempo.

4 La scelta di comporre lunghe trace vi appartiene oppure è una sorta di imposizione necessaria del post-rock?

Abbiamo iniziato con una linea vocale presente sulla maggior parte delle nostre canzoni, ma il suono che abbiamo ottenuto non è stato soddisfacente. Ci siamo resi conto che il lato strumentale delle composizioni era abbastanza forte da vivere da solo. Così lentamente ci siamo resi conto che il puro approccio strumentale era per piuttosto gradevole ed interessante. Così abbiamo deciso di passare ad un 100% strumentale. Ovviamente le canzoni hanno subito un processo di allungamento nel tentativo di raggiungere completezza.

5 Come considerate il fatto di essere paragonati a band come GSY!BE, God’s an astronaut, Explosion in the sky e If trees could talk? Per voi è motive di orgoglio oppure un banale parallelismo?

Quando abbiamo iniziato I Nirvana rappresentavano la maggior fonte di influenza musicale, e siamo ancora a quei giorni, ispirati ad incorporare elementi sonori presi dal quel tipo di musica. Dopo qualche tempo abbiamo focalizzato la nostra attenzione su di una musicalità esclusivamente strumentale, e il gruppo che per noi ha iniziato ad essere il più importate come riferimento è stato proprio GSYBE… dunque quando siamo relazionati con loro è per noi un motivo di orgoglio.

6 Considerando l’album, cosa e come dovrete gestire le cose in presa live?

Un cosa molto importante nel momento in cui abbiamo creato le canzoni, è stata quello di limitare la strumentazione delle composizioni che avremmo portato live attraverso il suono di quattro musicisti. Ci siamo assicurati che le poche cose che sono state aggiunte alle tracce in fase di registrazione non fossero il fulcro della canzone stessa, così da evitare di mostrare mancanze particolari in presa live.

Ad ogni modo, raramente ci sono aggiustamenti nelle composizioni che suoniamo dal vivo e saltuariamente ci sono elementi aggiuntivi rispetto alla versione su disco. Le canzoni sono pensate in questa maniera, i nostri album sono costruiti come se registrassimo live anche in studio, in maniera da provare a raggiungere un più autentico ed intenso suono su disco.

7 Ho notato che il vostro sito, nonostante si attivo, ancora non si connette ad un reale web site. Possiamo considerare questa una situazione momentanea? Quanto è importante per voi il web e i social network?

Internet è stato per noi un elemento fondamentale, ci ha permesso di proporre la nostra musica ovunque, riuscendo in questi anni a stabilire contati e collaborazioni. Ci ha dato la possibilità di distribuire il nostro album anche in paesi lontani che non avremmo potuto raggiungere altrimenti, ed inoltre ci ha permesso di suonare lontano dalla nostra Danimarca.

In merito ai social netto solitamente li utilizziamo come forma di comunicazione per live e news.

8 Cosa pensate del download illegal?

Questa è una materia che può essere analizzata attraverso diverse argomentazioni, un equilibrio di ragionamenti che stanno dietro alle scelte e alle caratteristiche dei singoli individui…

9 Metal, indie, post-rock music fan spesso sono incline a scegliere le hard copies ignorando gli mp3, cosa pensate del digital format?

A grandi linee, preferiamo le hard copies ed in modo particolare il vinile, tanto è vero che entro i prossimi sei mesi inizieremo la realizzazione di un album pensato per il vinile.

8 É oggi possibile vivere di musica?

La cosa dipende da svariati aspetti in costante evoluzione, dipendenti anche dal livello di adattabilità che una band possiede.

10 Ta qualche mese uscirete con una nuova release. Potete anticiparci qualcosa?

Stiamo creando il nostro prossimo disco, ma non credo possa uscire prima dell’inizio 2014. Stiamo lavorando su concetti ed approcci che abbiamo già utilizzato in passato, ma al contempo stiamo esplorando nuove strade per combinarli con nuove soluzioni; stiamo creando nuovi livelli di lettura caratterizzati da un intensificazione ed un ampliamento del suono.

1 All my little interview start with the same question: what The seven mile Journey means? What’s name genenis?

In the musical sense, there are certain concepts that we build our songs and albums around, that creates a degree of overall consistency. The concepts however are very wide ranging which allows us to explore these with various approaches in each individual song. Each album is focused more on certain concepts, but uses the wide range in these to explore their different dimensions and applying these variously in the individual songs. At the same time we keep the focus on, that the songs combined provide the feeling of the album as being a united story, and at the same time creating some separate underlying stories that are each continued from album to album. Although these may be harder to notice, they are present. The band name was chosen to support this approach.

2 How did you become part of the United Nations of Fluttery Records?

Fluttery Records contacted us during the construction of our last album Notes for the Synthesis. We liked the approach that they had to their artist so we decided to release the album through their record label.

3 How do your works come into life? Can you describe their producing process?

The main themes of the songs are often established before entering the rehearsal room, but after that, almost all of the music is created through jamming sessions, where every member in the band contributes. This approach sometimes takes a lot of time through eliminating or re-constructing different parts, but it allows us to make sure that we feel that the songs keeps their strength over time.

4 Was the choice of the long suites made of your own will or was it necessarily imposed by the post-rock genre?

We started out with vocals on most of our songs, but the poor sound conditions in the place we rehearsed the first years did not allow us to be able to hear the vocals over the songs. This forced us to make sure that the instrumental side of these was strong enough to stand alone. We slowly found out, that the pure instrumental approach to writing songs was satisfactory and very interesting to us, and therefore decided to shift the focus to this 100%. The songs then naturally started to progress in length, in order to capture what we felt made them feel complete.

5 How do you consider the fact of being compared to bands like GSY!BE, God’s an astronaut, Explosion in the sky e IF trees could talk? Is it for you source of pride or simply an annoying parallelism?

When starting out, Nirvana was our biggest musical influence and we are still to this day, inspired to incorporate musical elements from this genre into our songs. After we shifted our focus to purely instrumental music, the band that became most important to us within the post rock genre was GYBE, so when we get positive comments that are related to the music of GYBE, we feel honored by this.

6 Considering the album, what does your band manage to obtain playing live?

An important focus when we create the songs, is to limit the instrumentation of the songs to what we can perform live with four people, and we make sure that the few things that are sometimes added in the recordings, are never the drive of the song, so it is not felt that these are missing when we play live shows. Therefore there are seldom any adjustments in the composition of the songs when played live, and there is never any instrumentation added to our live performances that is not already present on the album versions of the songs.
Being that the songs are constructed this way, we also construct our albums with almost everything being played and recorded live in the studio, to try to achieve a more authentic and intense sound on the recordings.

7 I noticed your web address, although active, doesn’t connect to a real web site yet? Is this only a temporary situation? How important are the web and the social networks to a band like you?

The internet has definitely been an essential aspect for us, as it has allowed us to present the music to a worldwide audience and establish the contacts that we have collaborated with over the years. It has given us the possibilities of having our albums distributed in a range of countries we never thought possible, and has also allowed us to play concerts outside of Denmark. Regarding social networks, we mainly use these to announce shows and news.

8 What do you think about illegal download?

A subject that can be approached with many arguments, balanced by the reasoning behind the choice and characteristics of the individual.

9 Metal, indie, post-rock music fans are often still inclined to purchase hard copies ignoring mp3, what do you think about digital format?

Overall, we prefer hard copies and especially the vinyl format. We will ourselves within the next 6 months, begin releasing our former albums on vinyl.

8 Is still nowadays possible to make a living only by playing music?

It is very dependent on various aspects that are constantly changing and the choice of level of adaptability.

10 In a few months you will be out with a new release. Can you disclose something to us in advance?

We are currently constructing our next album but we do not expect it to be released before the beginning of 2014. We are on this album working with concepts and approaches that we have used in the past, but we are exploring these even further along with combining these with new ones, which we feel are creating new layers along with intensifying and broadening the overall dimensions and expression in the songs, in the sound of The Seven Mile Journey and in the new album as a whole.
